Planning a surprise proposal is one of the most exciting and nerve-wracking moments of your life. You want it to be meaningful, memorable, and not screw it up! But I know you also want to keep it as much of a surprise as you can (even if she knows it’s coming sooner or later). Maybe you have some ideas of how you’d like to propose or you might want suggestions and help to make it special. I’m here for you either way! I’ve put together these seven tips for how to plan a surprise proposal, to help make sure everything goes smoothly.

Hi there, I’m Stephanie Snow. I’ve help plan and photograph more than 60 surprise proposals from Lido Beach to Boca Grande in the last couple of years. I’d love to help you too. Our most popular photography package includes 2 photographers to capture every angle and a champagne celebration afterwards which makes for great photos plus it’s just plain fun. Let’s talk about your plans for the big day!

Tip 1: Choose the Right Location

I know, you either live here or are coming here on vacation and the beach is the obvious choice. I honestly couldn’t agree more! If possible, choose a location that holds personal meaning for both of you. Maybe you always vacation at the same beach and love to hang out there. Maybe, it’s a spot tied to a favorite memory. If it’s your first time here, let’s consider somewhere quiet and away from crowds so the moment feels as intimate as possible. Most importantly, make sure it’s a place your partner won’t be suspicious about visiting. After all, trying to keep it a surprise is part of the fun.

Tip 2: Prepare What You Want to Say

Even if you’ve talked about marriage before, emotions can run high in the moment. Take time to prepare your words ahead of time. Think about why you love your partner, what makes your relationship unique, and what your future together means to you. When the time comes, remember to slow down, look into their eyes, and get down on one knee. The words don’t have to be perfect, they just have to be heartfelt.

Tip 3: Hire a Photographer (ME) to Capture the Moment

This is a once-in-a-lifetime moment, and you’ll both want to relive it for years to come. Hiring a professional photographer, yes ME, ensures that your proposal is captured beautifully and discreetly. After doing so many of these, I know how to blend into the background as just being a normal tourist. We’ll talk and figure out a great plan so I can be in the right spot at the perfect moment to photograph it all. In many cases, my husband works with me to photograph from a different angle, so we really get every single moment of your proposal. It’s also a wonderful way to surprise your partner with photos immediately following the proposal that she’ll want to share on social media and later in your wedding announcements. Tip 4: Consider the Timing

Although proposals can happen any time, the last hour before sunset is very common. That way we get beautiful lighting and some good sunset photos afterwards. But it doesn’t have to be at sunset. We’ve done morning picnic proposals, just after lunch proposals (so she’s all dressed up), and one of my favorites, afternoon private boat tour proposals. Ask me about those because I don’t like to give away my secrets online!

Tip 5: Have a Plan B

Even the best-laid plans can be impacted by weather, crowds, or unexpected changes. That’s why it’s smart to have a backup option. If your dream location is outdoors, consider a nearby indoor space or a secondary outdoor spot that offers privacy. Having a plan B ensures you won’t be stressed on the big day, and your proposal will feel smooth and intentional no matter what happens.

Tip 6: Loop in Loved Ones

Decide ahead of time if you’d like your proposal to be a private, intimate moment or if you want family and friends to join the celebration afterward. Some couples love the intimacy of just the two of them, while others want to be surrounded by their closest people. Whether you plan a surprise gathering nearby or invite loved ones to join after the proposal, thinking this through in advance makes the experience even more meaningful.

Tip 7: Disguise Your Nerves (and Proposal) with a Decoy Plan

If you’re worried your partner might catch on, build your proposal into a fun activity. If you want a sunset proposal, telling her (and making) a dinner reservation at a nice restaurant is the #1 way guys get their girlfriends to dress up. Others have planned a walk through the park, an afternoon dolphin tour, or even a couple’s photo session “just for fun.” This creates a believable reason for being at the location without raising suspicion. By doing something that’s in line with your interests, you’ll avoid tipping them off while still pulling off a great surprise.

Planning the perfect surprise proposal takes thought and heart, but with the right preparation, you’ll create a moment that you and your partner will never forget. I’ve helped plan and photograph more than 60 surprise proposals and would love to work with you. Schedule a phone consultation today to talk over ideas that will make it really special!
