Manasota Key, with its serene beaches and stunning sunsets, is a perfect location for creating family memories. Whether you’re a local or visiting this hidden gem on Florida’s Gulf Coast, planning ahead can help make your session enjoyable and stress-free. Here are some top tips for a successful shoot on Manasota Key.
The time of day plays a significant role in the overall experience and the outcome of your family session.
Golden Hour: Beach sessions take place either first thing in the morning or an hour before sunset, when the light is soft and golden. This not only minimizes harsh shadows but also captures the warm, magical hues of the Gulf. Sessions generally last about an hour, give or take a few minutes depending on the size of your family and everyone's attention span!
Avoid Midday Heat: The Florida sun can be intense, especially in the summer. Because of the harsh light, I don't schedule beach sessions during the afternoon.
Manasota Key offers diverse backdrops for a variety of preferences:
Manasota Beach: Known for its expansive sandy shoreline and plenty of beach to find an area away from the crowds.
Stump Pass Beach State Park: A mix of trails and shoreline, ideal for families. It has limited parking and because of that, I don't generally plan sessions here.
Englewood Beach: The main beach on the island and usually the busiest. It is closed now (after the hurricanes). I generally don't plan sessions at Englewood Beach unless specifically requested.
AirBNB or Hotel: If you're vacationing at a place directly on the beach, let me know and I'll come to you. Although (almost) all of Manasota Key is public beach, it can be difficult to access areas without public parking lots. But if you're staying on the beach, then it's generally less busy than the main beaches.
Stick to Neutral Tones: Light and neutral shades, such as beige, blues, light green or white, complement the natural beach tones. Blue and white color combinations are extremely popular and look great but choose a palette that works for your family and your home decor if you're planning on wall art.
Avoid Loud Patterns: Keep it simple to let the stunning backdrop shine.
Comfort is Key: Lightweight, breathable fabrics are ideal for Florida’s warm climate. But bring a light coat/coverup/sweater if the weather forecast is in the 50's to low 70's in the winter.
Consider comfortable but cute footwear. We may take some photos on a boardwalk before going to the beach. When we get to the beach, most families decide to go barefoot.
Weather considerations in the "winter" months (from November to February): When we check the weather, if it's going to be in the 60's or 70's during your shoot, bring a light sweater or shawl to slip on if needed. The breeze can be cooler than you expect and it's best to be prepared. Even if you only slip it on in between shots.
Essentials: I often bring bug spray for no see ums but feel free to bring your own and it never hurts to bring a couple bottles of water and a beach towel, even if you leave them in the car until after your shoot.
Hair Tips for Women: For breezy days (and it's often breezy on the beach), consider styling hair up or bringing accessories like headbands to keep strands in place if needed.
Sunglasses: I expect that you'll show up with sunglasses but be prepared to take them off for your photos. Don't worry, I don't have you look at the sun.
For families with young children, ensuring they are comfortable and happy is crucial. We'll take as many breaks as necessary because we know that kids have short attention spans (so do adults sometimes!). We work with large family groups all the times with multiple children and we're good with "going with the flow". We never force a child to do anything they don't want to, but we can generally coax a few posed photos out of them before we lose their attention:
Snacks and Breaks: Pack their favorite snacks and water for energy. Bring food that won't dribble on their clothes. If they have a favorite toy that will keep them happy, feel free to bring it.
Playful Moments: Allow time for them to play in the sand or collect seashells to keep them engaged. I'll capture some of those candid moments because you'll want to remember later how much fun they had.
Candid Memories: Embrace natural, unposed moments that reflect genuine joy and connection. Kids aren't great at formal posed photos, so after a few organized photos, I encourage them the relax. Don't worry, we'll get the shots you want and more that you didn't know you wanted!
I don't bring or use a lot of props during our sessions because I aim for a timeless look. But thoughtful props can add a personal touch and help capture unique moments:
Blankets: I love blankets when working with young children because after standing for some pictures, we can sit the family down and create different interactions and looks. Plus, we can lay babies on the blanket for adorable baby shots. I have a large tan blanket that I'm happy to bring to sessions but if you have your own, please bring it.
Favorite Toys: For younger kids, this can help them feel at ease. I may or may not photograph them with their toys, but if it keeps them happy and entertained, I'm all for it!
Manasota Key’s beauty changes with the seasons.
Fall and Winter: Expect cooler, comfortable weather and busier beaches.
Summer: Enjoy vibrant greenery and bright sunsets. Make sure to wear quick dry, breathable clothes and be prepared for the potential of daily rain showers.
Before heading out, ensure you have everything you need:
Extra clothes for children in case of spills or accidents.
Towels, water, sunscreen, bug spray, and light coverup on the cool evenings.
A bag for collecting shells or storing sandy items (especially for kids). Feel free to bring a beach bag or large purse to store all the sunglasses and odds and ends. We'll take it to the beach with us and set it by the camera bag and keep everything safe.
I hope these tips help prepare you for your beach session. Manasota Key is more than just a picturesque destination—it’s a place where families can connect, laugh, and create lasting memories. With a little preparation, your session can be as enjoyable as it is meaningful.
