SURPRISE BEACH PROPOSAL in BOCA GRANDE, FLORIDA

There are surprise proposals, and then there are surprise proposals where every detail has a story behind it. When Bert called me about photographing his surprise beach proposal to Dominique in Boca Grande, he knew he wanted every detail to feel personal and special. He didn’t just want to walk down to the beach, get down on his knee and propose. He wanted an arch, hibiscus flowers, candles and custom champagne glasses. The biggest challenge was that Dominique couldn’t know any of this was for her!

How we pulled off this surprise beach proposal with an arch!

Boca Grande is a beautiful place for a proposal because there’s visual elements like the lighthouses and the old pier pilings. We worked with Holly from Palm Island Picnics to help Bert with his custom design for his arch setup. She worked her magic and went to Boca Grande in the afternoon and set this up on the beach for them. Little did we know that Bert and Dominique drove down to the beach earlier in the day to relax, while in reality, Bert was just checking it out and making sure he knew where to go later on! We planned for them to arrive around 7:15, which would give us about an hour before sunset. Bert asked Dominique to dress up because they were going to dinner at South Beach Bar & Grille. Around 6pm, storm clouds rolled in and Bert called me nervously wondering what to do. With our plan already in motion and the arch set up on the beach, we decided it was going to happen one way or another! Fortunately, as the storm clouds approached, everyone left the beach and, in the end, we never got any rain. Now we had the whole beach to ourselves to pull off this surprise.

Now it was time to make his surprise beach proposal happen and this is where we had to get creative. Holly and her husband had set up the arch and agreed to be our “fake models.” The idea was to make it look like I was photographing another couple on the beach, and they would just casually walk by us. Bert texted me when they arrived at the main parking lot and our fake photo shoot started. Holly and Lu were great sports, and we took cute photos of them. As Bert and Dominique walked by us, I casually turned and asked if they’d mind posing for a couple of photos for me. I told Dominique that our real models didn’t show up because of the storm and she seemed to buy it.

It gave us a completely believable reason for them to stand under the arch. Dominique didn’t realize she had just walked into her own proposal setup. That’s one of the things I love about photographing surprise proposals, the photography is only part of it. Sometimes there’s an entire production happening behind the scenes that they never see.

Then Bert got down on his knee

I gave Dominique and Bert some different posing prompts and took some pictures of them together. Then, I got her to look away from him and he took that moment to get down on his knee and asked the question he’s been waiting years to say. “Will you marry me?” Four simple words that he knew would change his life.

After all of the planning, custom details, secret conversations and elaborate cover story, the most important part of the evening was suddenly very simple. Bert and Dominique were together on the beach and she was completely surprised. Of course she said “YES”.

We gave them time to just be together, happy in their celebration. Then she realized this was all for her. The hibiscus theme wasn’t limited to just flowers on the arch. Bert had also custom-designed Dominique’s engagement ring with hibiscus flowers incorporated into the design. Plus, there was another surprise to come. Bert had custom champagne glasses with their names, today’s date and a special note on them made. We planned a special champagne celebration, and they toasted to their engagement right there on the beach.

From the Proposal to Engagement Photos

Once the secret was out, the pressure was gone and we started having fun. They had the whole beach to themselves to walk, dance, laugh and just be in love. These photographs are some of my favorite kinds of engagement portraits because they aren’t about trying to create a perfect pose, it’s just about capturing the love between two people.

We never got the storm from the clouds, but we did get one of the most beautiful sunsets of the season. The sky glowed orange on the horizon and pink over land. The colors were so incredible that it almost looked too good to be true, but this was the real Boca Grande sunset we were lucky enough to experience that evening.
