Sunrise vs Sunset Photoshoot

As a beach photographer in SW Florida, I often get asked, should we do a sunrise or sunset family session? The truth is, both times of day offer their own unique beauty and challenges. Knowing the pros and cons can help you decide what’s best for your family.

Considerations for Sunrise Sessions

Benefits:

1. Peaceful, empty beaches – Sunrise means fewer crowds, so you’ll have more privacy and open space for your photos. No need to worry about strangers in the background!
2. Calmer water and less wind – Mornings are usually cooler and calmer, which means smooth water and hair that’s easier to manage.
3. Beautiful soft light – The early sun creates dreamy pastel colors, perfect for a romantic or serene look.
4. Great for kids – Little ones are usually happiest and most alert in the morning, which can make family sessions smoother.

Potential Downsides:

1. The window of time is short before the sun gets too high, leading to squinting and harsher light.
2. Early wake-up calls! Especially in the summer when the sun rises before 7:00 AM.

Considerations for Sunset Sessions

Benefits:

1. Convenient timing – No need to wake up early. Sunset sessions are easier for most schedules. Sessions start about an hour before sunset which ranges from 5:30-8:30 throughout the year.
2. Golden-hour magic – That warm, glowing light as the sun sets over the Gulf is hard to beat for portraits. Although we can’t control the weather, we always hope for a bright and beautiful sunset.
3. Longer time frame – Evening light gradually softens, giving us about 45 minutes to shoot with flattering conditions.
4. Romantic atmosphere – Sunsets can create a dramatic, colorful backdrop that feels timeless.

Potential Downsides:

1. Beaches can be busier, especially during tourist season from October to April, which sometimes means working around crowds. We always find a small section of beach so that it looks and feels as private as possible.
2. The Gulf breeze usually picks up in the evening, which can add movement to hair and dresses (sometimes fun for dresses, but not always ideal for long hair).
3. In the summer, sunset is around 8:30 pm, which can be tough for little kids who are already winding down for bed.

Which one is right for your family?

It really depends on your what you want. Will your family be willing to get up at 5:30 am and get ready for a morning session? If you know they are going to fight you on this, then sunset is probably better! BUT, if you like quiet beaches, calm waters, and cooler temperatures, sunrise might be perfect. If you’re drawn to the classic golden glow of a Florida sunset and don’t mind a few more people around, sunset is the way to go.
